Become a Mentor

Our mentors are professionals or women pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees in engineering, science, technology, medicine or math-related fields. While the girls who sign up for Cybermentor live in Alberta, our mentors can—and do—live anywhere.

A mentor is not a parent, coach, tutor, or counselor. Mentoring is a one-to-one relationship in which the mentor offers encouragement and constructive comments based on openness, mutual trust and respect. You bring your willingness to share and we’ll provide online training materials and suggestions for topics to discuss with the girl you’re matched with.

The two of you will exchange regular messages through a secure website, using your computer, phone or tablet. Our mentors share personal experiences, ask questions and engage in a little small talk to build the relationship, and guide the discussion based on your matches’ interests.

Mentors provide direction, educational advice and a window into university and/or professional life—all of which is enormously beneficial to the girls. Our mentors get a lot of out of the relationship too. They enjoy the opportunity for reflection, get a deeper understanding of their discipline, improve their communication, leadership and mentoring skills and have the opportunity to network with other successful women in science and engineering.

You can make a world of difference by inspiring the next generation of girls in science, technology, engineering, and math. And in the process, you may reinvigorate your passion for your own career.

As a Mentor:
  • You commit to mentoring a girl between the ages of 11 and 18 (grades 6 to 12) for the current school year (September to June)

  • Familiarize yourself with Cybermentor’s mentor training materials (provided once you have joined the program) and other resources on the website

  • Commit to connecting online with your mentee at least once a week throughout the mentoring season, and leading the relationship

  • Read Cybermentor’s monthly e-newsletters for important communications and opportunities—this is our primary communication vehicle to our mentors

  • Give us feedback

  • Have fun! Cybermentor is meant to be a learning experience for mentors as well as the girls
